The German government on Friday called on Iran to return to adhering to the nuclear deal after Tehran announced that it was planning to violate more provisions of it.
“We call on Iran not to escalate the situation further. Considering the ongoing efforts to de-escalate, this announcement [from Tehran] is not the right signal,” a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said.
Earlier on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif informed the EU that Tehran would be terminating parts of the 2015 agreement after the U.S. implemented further sanctions against Iran.
The German government said that Berlin wanted to uphold the nuclear agreement, but this was only possible if Iran also stuck to it.
The ministry spokesman said it was not too late for Iran to peddle back.
Tensions between Iran and the other signatories of the deal have moved towards escalation after the U.S. pulled out of the deal in 2018 and reinstated crippling economic sanctions.
In a highly unusual step against a top diplomat, the Trump administration even slapped sanctions on Zarif.
In July, Iran announced that it had violated the part of the deal that determined how much enriched uranium it could stockpile.
